Julia Willms′ video installations explore the limits of perception between illusion and reality. Produced in situ, her projections modify, extend and disturb the surrounding space. The artist projects an animated film, through a window, on a door, or at the end of a corridor, and in doing so, envelops the spectator into a new dimension. The architecture of the exhibition space and the illusionist space created by the projections become confused. The spectator, immersed in a perceptive dilemma, loses a sense of space and hovers between fiction and reality.
Julia Willms studied Visual Communications at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht and Media Art at the University for Applied Arts in Vienna (MA 2005). She has taken part in several group exhibitions (at Kunsthalle Vienna – project space in Vienna, at GAM Gallery in Essen, at W139 Basement in Amsterdam, and at Intrusion in NYC) and media art festivals (at BackUP in Weimar, EMAF in Osnabrück, Almost Cinema as part of the International Filmfestval Ghent in Ghent). Apart from her video installations she also collaborates on performance projects with sound artists, performers, composers and choreographers.
