The South Korean artist Juhee Youn presents two works resulting from her residency at agentur: the video installation Extra Beings and the video work Outside In.
The first one plays with the state of in–betweenness as a consequence of the need to position oneself in a social system. As the artist puts it herself: "My state of obscurity is seen as a standing on the border between amateurism and professionalism, between becoming an artist and being a student or between Holland and Korea."
For the video work Outside In, the final outcome of a project started earlier this year at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, Juhee changed her position as an artist and followed the museum′s volunteer program for a month. She took this different position as a starting point for interviews with her colleagues questioning their personal and subjective approaches towards art.
Youn′s artistic approach ranges from performances to video work, dealing with topics such as the situation and circumstances of young artists who try to survive in the art world. Therefore, she has explored different careers and set–ups, thus researching the mechanisms of the contemporary art business. Youn has recently started to study the state of in–betweenness: the state of people living in uncertain positions, in states of obscurity, neither belonging here nor there. As a protagonist, Youn also represents this position: she characterizes the different stages of this in–betweenness and shows us, the viewers, this otherness.
