Guda Koster′s works are produced for specific sites, projects or commissions. Her works and installations are mostly made of various kinds of textiles and fabrics and refer to clothing, fashion and things like curtains and carpets. Her works are simple and don′t pretend to be anything more than variations on fashion, interior design, and architecture, although there is often a surprising twist in the function of these ′familiar objects′.
Her starting-point is the reality of our everyday lives, but she tries to show our daily routine, surroundings and circumstances in a new and surprising perspective. She doesn′t take ′the ordinary′ for granted. Her works are no critique of the clichés, dullness and boredom of ordinary lives, but she′s, on the contrary, looking for an optimistic and fresh perspective on reality.
In her recent works clothing plays an important role. Clothing protects and gives an identity to the wearer, even if this is only appearance. By dressing up differently, one seems to become another person. It is about who you are and what you want to be. As for example Stadsguerilla, which is inspired by the camouflage–trend in fashion. The shown clothes, made of camouflage fabric, are not based on military models but on ′nice′ clothes that are worn on the occasion of important social happenings or parties. Father, mother and their two children give a choice impression but as a family they seem to stay invisible.
Guda Koster will present a few of her ′clothes′ projects in de setting of the space of agentur:. At the same time a number of articles of clothing will be shown in a life performance during the Artist Talk on Thursday 1 March.
